Our day started at the Mercedes Museum where we spent an unprecedented four hours. So much to see and learn, we won’t bore you with details, you are all quite capable of your own research, so we’ll simply share a selection of photos.
While at the museum, we read about Weissenhof Strasse, an area of Bauhaus inspired properties now owned by UNESCO incorporating a museum created from two Le Corbusier designed houses originally built for the Werkbund exhibition in 1927. One has been converted into a museum providing historical information about the Weissenhof estate, from its early development to the present day. The other has been restored back to how it was originally – an open plan space, with clever storage, sliding partitions and beds that spend the day in cupboards, reflecting design principles of train carriages, turning a spacious day time living space into compact bedrooms at night.
It’s been another long drive from Stuttgart but, once off the motorway, the drive to the far shore of Lake Achensee , past Lake Tegernsee, was glorious. We are staying in Hotel Wiesenhof, a family run hotel, with views overlooking the lake.
